On Thursday, as teenagers across the UK prepare to receive their calculated A Level results, Clarkson took to Twitter to reassure his 7.2 million followers that failure in the state exams does not preclude success later in life.

The 60-year-old tweeted: ‘A level results not great? Don’t worry, I got a C and 2 Us and I’m currently building a large house with far reaching views of the Cotswolds.’

Amid concerns that this year’s calculated grades system could lead to a massive influx in student appeals, Clarkson went on to quip: ‘And I didn’t even get the chance to insist the government gave me three As instead’.

Each year, Clarkson, who is believed to be worth approximately £46 million, trots out the same sentiment on A Levels results day, a tradition anticipated with mockery by Twitter pundits on Thursday.

Another slightly more scathing response stated: ‘Oh can we not drop these annual “I’m part of a small minority who performed badly in my A Levels, but I’m still obscenely rich” tweets?’

A further Twitter user joked: ‘Wonder what grades Jeremy Clarkson got in his a-levels, and to what degree it impacted his later life. Guess we’ll never know’.
